Uraga Samii
Guji, Ethiopia
Variety: Ethiopian Heirloom
Processing: Washed
Origin: Guji, Ethiopia
Producers: Uraga Small-holders
Altitude: 2400m
Some of our all-time favorite coffees have come out of the Guji zone in Ethiopia, and this washed lot from Israel Degfa's Uraga washing station has confidently made a space for itself on that list. Recent changes in Ethiopian commodity regulations have allowed mill owners like Israel the ability to sell directly to exporters rather than routing through the complicated commodities exchange system. This allows for more direct traceability from farm to cup and has given producers more incentive to improve lot quality. All of Israel's mills have seen recent investment in quality control measures, resulting in absolutely stellar coffees this year. Israel has invested the increased premiums from this year's crop in education for local communities around the mills and looks forward to sharing continued success in the years to come. With coffee this remarkable, we wish them all the best!
Uraga Samii is a brilliant coffee with all our favorite characteristics of washed Ethiopian Heirloom beans on display. A vibrant peach note provides the perfect mix of sweetness and tartness, combined with a Meyer lemon note that contributes sparkling citrus acidity. There's also a very notable presence of black tea flavor, reminiscent of the complex floral taste of Earl Grey. This is an intense coffee with lots of different flavors at play, but we love how they all come together to create a stunningly unique coffee that we absolutely love. We knew we had to share this one with the club, and we really want to know what you think about this medley of flavor!

This Coffee's Lemon and Black Tea notes stood out most to me. The Smooth Lemon made me smile!

I always enjoy the fruitiness of Ethiopian coffee and this is a great example. Peach, lemon, and black tea are easily discernible (I also though of lemongrass). I’ll savor this bag!

I like light roasted coffees because of their subtlety--different flavors and taste notes in every bag. This Uraga has pronounced black tea taste, but it's the lemon that helps balance it. Very good coffee.

The black tea stood out to me the most and had a very refreshing quality to it. I prefer a darker roast for my morning cup, but either way it's a lovely roast.

This full of flavor coffee is seriously incredible. I appreciate the balance of tartness between the peach & lemon notes. Growing up a GA girl, a lovely tart peach is just as pleasing as the super-sweet ones! Combined with the light Earl Grey hints leaves this coffee as truly wonderful!

Having now had specialty coffee from several regions, my favorite so far is from the Guji zone of Ethiopia. This coffee is superb and the tasting notes described by MCC are spot on. If high altitude, bright coffee is your thing, don't miss out on this!
