This lot of coffee comes to us from the 2019 Cup of Excellence competition in Jaen, Peru. Sean attended the event and had a chance to cup this coffee while he was there. It blew him away on the cupping table, and he knew this was a lot that we needed to secure for the Tasting Series. It ended up placing in the top 30 from the entire country, earning a berth in the Cup of Excellence winner’s auction. We joined together with some other roasters in a buying group, and thankfully our group placed the winning bid for this incredible coffee. We’ve been waiting with bated breath for this coffee to arrive from origin - and we’re over the moon that it’s here!
Picorana is a plot of land in Cajamarca, Peru that’s tended by Jose Cristian Lavan Guerreo. After getting married and starting a family, his father gave him an acre of land to begin his coffee operation - which he planted with both Caturra and Geisha varietals. His first harvest in 2018 was promising, and this year’s crop was submitted to the Cup of Excellence where it distinguished itself. You don’t often see Geisha grown and processed alongside other varietals, but in this case we think the results are outstanding. Bright raspberry tartness and acidity, sweet cane sugar notes, and a lovely warmth of spice make Picorana an exquisite and unforgettable brew. Coming out of Jaen, we’re confident this is one of the best, if not the best, coffee from Peru available this year. Enjoy!
