Suke Quto
Guji, Ethiopia
Variety: Kurume, Welicho
Processing: Washed
Origin: Guji, Ethiopia
Producer: Tesfaye Bekele
Altitude: 17800m
This is a fantastic lot of coffee from the prolific Suke Quto farm & washing station in Guji - one of the premier coffee producers in Guji known for its sweet, bright coffees. Owner Tesfaye Bekele was integral to the development of the specialty coffee sector in Guji, and uses his expertise and connections to both grow incredible coffees on his own land and operate a community washing station for small-holders to process their coffees. His washed coffees are pulped and soaked for 36-48 hours before drying on raised beds, and he produces some excellent naturals as well - all utilizing environmentally-friendly methods.
This washed lot is giving us smooth sweetness for days. A bright peach note reassures us this is a Guji coffee, while some richer honey flavors and a nice creamy finish give the cup a subdued, refined feel. Suke Quto is a special place that produces special coffees - and it really does seem like you can taste all the care and effort that went into this bean when you brew it. We're stoke we got to bring this coffee to the club, and we hope it excites you as well.

We loved this coffee so much! It tasted just like coffee from a local shop that charges $5 for a very good cup of coffee. I was honestly blown away by the flavor. Plus we just used a regular drip coffee maker. I HIGHLY recommend this!!

Sweet and creamy with just a touch of acid, Suke Quto is tremendous. Soft, smooth mouthfeel that rounds out into a long, sweet finish. Exceptionally well-balanced and structured. Tremendous coffee.

This coffee honestly surprised me! I didn't need any sugar, just some steamed milk did the trick. Also, the peach flavor is actually there! It's subtle and definitely natural, very pleasant!

I really liked this coffee, I couldn't stop myself from making a Chemex at 8pm the day it arrived. It's delicious. Light flavors of honey and grilled peach flow through a cup with medium body and a light mouthfeel. I haven't had it on espresso yet but I'm sure it will equally impress since the roast is a perfect medium.

I got pretty weak brews from this one until I realized I could do something about it by grinding it finer. With a finer grind than I normally use the result was a fuller body and more flavors. I still didn't love the result -- I prefer the richer stuff of the Americas -- but it at least let me see why this was another interesting club selection. I wish I made the adjustment earlier though...

...it finishes with some complexity. At first, this reminded me of that great coffee your favorite breakfast spot serves, and when you ask the staff where they got it, they refuse to tell you. But then some subtle complexity develops to remind you why you purchased coffee here rather than at the supermarket. The pre-brewed grounds also have a fantastic, earthy scent compared to the oxidized odor from old beans. Treat yourself...because, that's really the whole point. (burr ground, medium/fine, pour-over)

This has to be a preference given the fan fav reviews below... peach is a extremely mild fruit which cascades through the cup. Don’t get me wrong, it beats store bought coffee any day of the week, just prefer bolder or more acidic fruits in my coffee. I’ll have to switch to a French press to see if that helps bring out a bolder flavor over my typical chemex brew.

I have tried to brew this coffee on pour over and I am just not getting much flavor at al. It has come out with very light body, light strawberry accent, and a mellow but bright floraly (Earl Grey) tealike finish. I may try a few tweaks and see if I get a better result.

Used a pour over about 30g to 500 ml water. A lot lighter and smoother with very little oils.

Smooth and creamy coffee, with subtly sweet notes. Peach, stone fruit definitely there. Like some of the others on this post, I also got a bit of a lighter cup than expected - 45mg to 720 (1:16 ratio), ground in Baratza encore, brewed in Chemex. Could be the washed process for the beans? To be fair, my grinder may need some maintenance (though usually grinds finer than I expect which wouldn't produce the lighter roast I got), and I tend to prefer a bit more acidic bite in my coffee, like other Ethiopias. Not quite my favorite so far. But a nice and flavorful cup.

I prefer darker roasts but wanted to give this one a try. Brewed on my Chemex, and the result was an acceptable smooth brew with some nice flavors. I think I will like the Classic Profile coffees better and look forward to trying them. Perhaps my palate needs time to adjust after years of darker roasts!

I could not extract the flavors from this coffee. I tried french press, pour over and aeropress at varying grinds for each. I used a ratio of 1:16 originally and less water later. The coffee seemed too light and would not produce a crema on the top while brewing as it does with other coffees. i'm disappointed because the tasting notes sounded really nice.
I should say, I prefer lighter roasts so a different taste preference was not the issue for me.

This was one of the best coffees I’ve ever had - it is definitely worth the money! Save yourself the $20+ you pay at coffee places a week/month and invest in coffee like this! The peach notes were so divine <3

This is a very delicious coffee and a good example of what I think of when I think about Ethiopian coffee, while perhaps a bit less bright than some Ethiopian coffee thanks to the sweetness.

I know that freshly roasted coffee tastes good, but this exceeded my expectations. Coffee was very sweet and I loved the flavor. I had a little acidic taste but that may be because my grind wasn't consistent. I used a KitchenAid blade grinder. Do not buy it!
Hey Akshay, Glad you enjoyed it, despite the blade grinder! We do really recommend a burr grinder whenever possible to get the most out of the beans, but happy the quality still came through for you!

Like a nice red Rhone wine, this Ethiopian is a voluptuous, yet refined cup of coffee, big and sweet and round. It's delicious to drink--a French press really brings out the flavors in this one--a star find, and one of Moustache's best. Keep 'em coming!

On my third shipment and this is my favorite yet...my first cup of this was like that one in a 1000 cups. I was thinking about that cup all day. Can't wait for my next cup.
Really happy to hear it. Chasing that 1 in a 1000 is what the club's all about! :)

I don't know how to describe it exactly but this coffee hit all the right notes for me. If I only had to have one type of coffee for the rest of my life, it'd be this.
That's what we like to hear! (The favorite coffee part - that is. There's too many great producers to drink just one origin forever.) We'll be roasting more in the coming weeks - keep an eye on your schedule to snag some more.

make affogatos for some friends and the coffee was so perfect for it. Also just to drink it is very smooth and delicious when I use my steamed almond milk in it.

Hey Erik, What grinder are you using? If you have any settings to share, might help other folks dial in their coffees and compare.

Oh, good idea! I usually run my Baratza Virtuoso at 8 but took it down to 6 for this one. At that point I get some fines sneaking though the Melita paper filters I use but it was worth it.
