Mahembe #3
Nyamasheke, Rwanda
Variety: Red Bourbon
Processing: Washed
Origin: Nyamasheke, Rwanda
Producers: Justin Musabyiami
Altitude: 1900M
Another amazing coffee from Justin Musabyiami. Justin had some trouble in the months leading up to this year's harvest, with a storm destroying some of the walls of his station and ruining his depulper. He's still going strong though, as this lot will prove. He has an 8-hectare farm of his own, and buys cherries from the surrounding smallholders. This area is not as well known for quality coffees as some other parts of Rwanda, but has great altitudes and an increasing number of farmers growing at those higher altitudes. Competition for good cherry can be pretty tough, farmers can deliver to whichever washing station they want. Maintaining a good supply of cherry is dependent on the relationships Justin has with farmers, and being able to offer competitive pricing for quality. His roots and history in this community help him strengthen these relationships. Justin’s organized operations, plus the work he is doing on the ground to improve quality, mean he’s always got something exciting in the works.
Justin produces such high quality coffee, it’s no surprise this cup is delicious. We’re getting bright, lively fruit flavors - and as the cup cools you may notice some more herbal, tea-like tones. We love Rwandan coffee at MCC, and we think Mahembe #3 will have you feeling the same way.

#2 last week and #3 this week. Both were very good but liked #3 a bit better because it was slightly more flavorful.

This is a delightfully bright and cheerful coffee. I love Columbian beans, but this is similar in the berry/tart notes. It is quite smooth with a very subtle and not bitter aftertaste.

I really enjoyed #2, but this is even better - as another commenter noted, it is simply more flavorful. A lovely nose full of baking spices like cinnamon suffused with a strong cherry aroma. A bit like fresh cherry pie. Delightful. In the mouth it is smooth, full (full for African coffee that is), juicy and tart. A few sips in I detected some nice dark chocolate notes as well. Lovely stuff!

This is the type of coffee I usually don’t like, but maybe I hadn’t had the right one. It’s fantastic. For some reason it makes me think of one word: burgundy.

Nice sweetness upfront, subtle fruit notes, and a spicy, cinnamon flourish. Wonderful, lingering, roasty finish. Rich, smooth, luxurious mouthfeel. Very enjoyable.
