El Higueron
Tarrazu, Costa Rica
Variety: Caturra
Processing: Washed
Origin: Tarrazu, Costa Rica
Producers: Daniela Gutierrez
Altitude: 1700m
As is the case with many coffees from Costa Rica, El Higueron is a family affair. Jorge Gutierrez has been farming coffee for many years and has passed the passion for quality production on to his daughters. Their operation has grown over the years, notably with the purchase of their own micro-mill in 2008. Now Jorge's daughter Daniela manages the family mill while Jorge oversees the farms. They focus on maintaining quality standards while developing sustainable practices like reducing water used in processing and planting shade trees to promote biodiversity and lower their carbon footprint.
El Higueron is a unique washed coffee that is defined by its fruity notes of cherry and plum that are punched up with a candy-like sweetness. In contrast, a citrusy lemongrass note smooths the profile out and adds some complexity to the brew. A light floral aftertaste lingers when all is said and done, which has convinced us more than once to brew a second cup. We love coffees that combine unexpected flavors into something cohesive, and El Higueron does so perfectly. Give it a try, and let us know how you like it!

This was an excellent coffee that we both loved. My wife usually doesn't comment on the flavor of the coffee, but she commented almost immediately how much she enjoyed the flavor.

It does have some of the fruit notes mentioned in the description. Overall, it was a good cup of coffee, though not as distinct or delicious as a lot of others I've had from MCC or elsewhere.

I got this shipment of beans and ground it up in my EK and pulled a shot on the Oscar and immediately got a great shot with a little bit of candied fruit flavor. Itβs a new flavor to me and it was very cool. With a litttle bit of tweaking I got a shot of espresso with candied fruit noted mad style. This easily shot up to being one of my favorite roasts ππ»π₯
